An Easy Death Gunnie Rose Charlaine Harris Books

I loved the Sookie, Aurora, Lily and Midnight series. I own them all on paper and duplicates on my Kindle. I also have two stand alone books. That said, my excitement when I saw this first in a new series was such I bought the book on Kindle. I read it last night. The kill rate is immense and somewhat overdone. I wish more words had been used to establish the background of influenza, government breakdown, invasion and breakup of the country. Instead of giving us that first, it is dribbled throughout the book. The killing begins early and often, with asides of magicians, Comanche, rape (attempted and successful) bathing and amazing recovery from being shot. I won't be continuing with this series. I don't think this is her best work.

An Easy Death Gunnie Rose Charlaine Harris Books Reviews

This book was amazing and the most original story I've seen in years. It's part alternate history, part fantasy, part gunslinger, and has a wonderfully strong and realistic female lead. Lisbeth Rose, who tells her own story in the first person, is a "gunnie." In this version of the 1940's, a "gunnie" is a bodyguard who protects groups who are traveling through the dangerous country. She has an arsenal of guns and rifles, and she's very, very good at what she does. Charlaine Harris tells the story in Lisbeth's voice, and we learn a lot about her and her world pretty quickly. I love the magic that is also seamlessly woven into it. I won't spend time here summarizing the story, but will say there's never a dull moment. I love Lisbeth Rose, and I hope this first outing is the beginning of many adventures for her. I'm happy to tell you that this is a whole story, with a real ending where everything is wrapped up satisfactorily. No cliffhanger here; Charlaine Harris is too good and too much of a professional for that . She respects her readers enough to give us an honest and very real heroine with flaws and skills, and she doesn't need a cliffhanger or any tricks to keep her readers coming back for more. And so I say, "More, please!" Easily all the stars there are!
I found this disappointing. It's a very fast read; I read it in a day and I wasn't just sitting and reading, I fit in little bits of time to read as I worked on other things. The storyline seemed rather pointless as it definitely is only the beginning of a series; there is obviously more to come. Landscape is very bleak and an alternative timeline, with little hints of what year it is, but leaves you guessing. It's definitely not a Midnight, Texas type of series.
In Rose's world, the US collapsed in the first half of the twentieth century, after a worse flu epidemic and a deeper depression. Mexico has retaken land in the south, Canada has expanded from the north, much of the northeast has rejoined Britain, much of the southeast is independent (if at first you don't secede...), and the rest is Balkanized. California and Oregon have become the Holy Russian Empire - ruled by the Romanovs who, in this world, escaped the revolution.

Rose - a teenage gunslinger, and good at her job - lives in Texoma, a somewhat-lawless region that includes parts of Texas and Oklahoma. She is hired to assist a couple of magicians (okay, that's another difference from our world) who are headed for Mexico on a mission that turns out to be fraught with political importance for the Russian court.

The actual story doesn't matter, and that's the main weakness of the book. Its purpose is to introduce the milieu and some of the characters. It's a competently-told adventure story - the party comes to a new town, someone tries to kill them, Rose shoots the assassins, the party heads for the next town - but the author doesn't seem to have her heart in it.

It may be more useful to think of "An Easy Death" as the opening of a longer series that may have much of the same feel as the Sookie Stackhouse series, if the author can pull it off.
Lizbeth is a strong female lead who is a Gunnie. The story which is set in a post apocalyptic US southwest is well constructed. It uses elements of history as we know it with a quirky, twisty bent with magic and wizards. And, a underlying relationship with Eli, a . . Oops almost a spoiler.
Charlaine Harris a favorite and she delivers a fresh new adventure. More, please.
OK, I really did start it this morning and read until I finished.
I gave Harris a wide berth after the last few books in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I wasn't satisfied and I moved on to other authors. This is the first book in a new series and it is tightly written with plenty of excitement. Lizbeth is a gun for hire on the margins. Her work involves lots of loss and rubbing shoulders with the magical world. I'd call it a page turner; you could easily read this in a day. Harris does a nice job here with character. I wasn't that much drawn into the Russian plot but I did like the interplay amongst the characters. Lots of guns, quick deaths and a brief rape scene early in the book. This is a violent culture with a barter economy and a lot of social mores.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well constructed this book was; my follow up reader (husband) felt the gun content was accurate so nice work with that. My house smells like Hoppe's gun oil right now! For anyone who likes a fast moving adventure with fantasy.
