I liked this , to me , new series . I will buy more of this urban fantasy . The two main characters are a female , - Wren Valere -' current ' user and her mundane, male handler, Sergei . The book is set in on alternate Earth where magic is used , only they call it Current , like a form of electricity . Wren is a master at manipulating it and her job is mostly retrieving objects that have been stolen . Usually by another magic user . This makes for a lot of dangerous work , not made any easier by the fact that the general population doesn't know about magic ; I must say , without detracting from the enjoyment of this book , I think the ones where wielding magic is a skill and a job like any other are more realistic . In this case , Wren has been hired to retrieve a -stolen - magical cornerstone from a building . Before she knows it , she is in hot water for the job is not as straightforward as she supposed . She and her handler , Sergei must make some though decisions to survive . They are in many things opposites of each other . The man is a former Russian immigrant who now runs an art store . His mysterious background is slowly revealed in the book . There is an attraction between the two main characters , with some sexual tension . I suppose it will build up more in the following books . The plot is well worked out , the characters engaging and several side characters are well defined and equally interesting . I recommend this book and hope the rest of the series is just as good .

This book had some really great concepts that pulled me into buying it in the first place modern day wizardry, some detecting (and maybe some B&E) and the promise of witty banter and simmering romantic underpinnings.... and it failed to deliver on just about everything. Very rarely is there a book out there that I will put down, walk away, and not come back to for days without being in agony about what happens next... and sadly this was one of those
Characters felt underdeveloped, or more cliche than real. The plot plodded, jumped a bit here and there, and there were some POV jumps that just didn't make sense if we're following the main characters 90% of the time... Part of that I think came from the 'set up' for future stories and world building that was being attempted, and part of it just felt very rough.
Things that I liked was the idea of the hidden wizards of the world and how they make their way... and this basic premise was the diamond in the rough of the book... until I realized that the Dresden Files does this, and does it WAY better. After that, the sparkle went out. And I had the urge to read Jim Butcher's series again.

And while I normally don't pay attention to typesetting... this book was HORRID! Words jumped lines constantly, the kerning was inconsistent, and the worst part was... everything kept flowing into the binding! whole words would be absorbed and I kept having to try and crack the spine a bit to get the full word. While not that author's domain, this really kept throwing me out of the storyline.
Our heroine is Wren Valere, a talented young woman in her late 20s who is a lonejack, a solo magic user raised up in a soloist tradition. She works as a "retriever" - essentially a thief with considerable magical talents. Someone stole something from you - something magical, dangerous, powerful? You pay Valere and her "manager" Sergei Didier, and she'll steal it right back.
New York City is a vibrant place at any time, but in LAG's world talents (those who feel and manipulate current) and nulls (those who neither feel nor manipulate current/magic) intersect constantly, and it's not always a pretty sight. We have the Cosa Nostradamus -- the fatae who live their own magic, the nonhuman griffins, piskies, dryads, etc. - and those humans who are either lonejacks of varying power and skills, or members of The Council. The Council prefers to run everything in its own city. They want control of all magic-users - but they'll settle for intimidation.
And then there are the humans who have no magic of their own, but know it exists and want to know what's going on in every nook and cranny of the city. They hire lonejacks to work with them, their interface staff called "handlers" who manage the "talent".
You can look forward to small, fascinating bits of info about the magic system LAG has built (and built it well, better than most fantasies these days.) You'll enjoy Wren's interaction with non-human Cosa members and null humans. She's delightfully race-blind in her associations, and struggles to understand humans of all stripes. You'll come to love a four-foot demon nick-named P.B. (polar bear) who runs messages - for a price. Wren has been chasing a cursed, stuffed, traveling magic artifact for years, and deals with Chinese take-out where a Seer writes the fortunes.
Check out this world. I found the first book of The Retrievers, STAYING DEAD, an excellent place to start, because there is an arc to the big story, but there are smaller tales inside each volume, allowing them to stand pretty well on their own. Problems? I'll mention the biggest one she keeps introducing interesting characters and killing them off too soon.
Somehow this series (of which this is book #1) flew completely under my radar. I’m glad I finally found it. Our heroes are Wren, Talented (i.e., magic-using) thief, and Sergei, art gallery owner and Wren’s business manager, who is not Talented but has secrets of his own. The pair are hired to retrieve a stolen protective artifact and, of course, complications ensue... AFTER the retrieval. Add in xenophobia, power politics among various magic-using factions, and Sergei’s past coming back to badger him, and you have an introduction to an interesting world.
